The Hawa Mahal, or Palace of Winds, is a five-story palace in Jaipur, in the Indian state of Rajasthan, built in 1799 by Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh and designed by the architect Lal Chand Ustad. Its pink and red sandstone facade is covered with hundreds of small windows with latticework, called jharokhas. These allowed the women of the royal household, who were expected to observe purdah, to watch street life and festivals without being seen, while cooling air flowed through them. The palace is really a screen wall rather than a full residence. It is among the best-known symbols of Jaipur, the so-called Pink City.
