Adam Mickiewicz was born on 24 December 1798 in Zavosse. A Polish poet, dramatist and political activist, Mickiewicz is regarded as the national poet of Poland and a leading figure of Romanticism. Born in what is now Belarus, at a time when Poland did not exist as a state, he was arrested for his involvement in a student society and exiled to Russia. His epic poem Pan Tadeusz, set among the gentry in Lithuania, and his dramatic poem Dziady, express the longing for national independence. He spent most of his life in exile in Paris, where he taught Slavic literature at the College de France, and he died in Constantinople while organizing a Polish legion.
