Camp Nou is the football stadium of FC Barcelona, opened on 24 September 1957 in the Les Corts district of the city. The club had outgrown its older ground, and the new stadium was designed by the architects Francesc Mitjans, Josep Soteras and Lorenzo Garcia-Barbon. Its name means New Field in Catalan, and it was built to hold far more spectators than the old Camp de Les Corts. It became the largest stadium in Europe and has hosted European finals, the opening game of the 1982 World Cup and Olympic matches. For Catalans the club and the stadium are also symbols of their regional identity. A large modernization and expansion has been underway in recent years.
