Bojnice Castle is a medieval castle in the town of Bojnice in central Slovakia, in the Upper Nitra region, and is one of the most visited castles in the country. It was first mentioned in the twelfth century, as a wooden fortification, and was later rebuilt in stone. Over time it belonged to powerful noble families, including Matthew Csak, the Hungarian king Matthias Corvinus, and the Thurzo and Palffy families. In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Count Janos Palffy had it rebuilt in a romantic style, inspired by French castles such as those of the Loire valley. It has a collection of art and is used for festivals, and the castle has a reputation for its legends and its ghost stories.
