Construction of Spiš Castle

12th century

Spiš Castle is a large castle ruin in eastern Slovakia, above the town of Spišské Podhradie, and one of the biggest castle complexes in Central Europe. Building began in the 12th century on a travertine hill as a royal fortress guarding the northern frontier of the Kingdom of Hungary. It was expanded in the Gothic period during the 13th to 15th centuries and was held by powerful noble families such as the Zápolya and Thurzó. A fire in 1780 left it abandoned, and it fell into ruin. It is part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site that also includes Levoča and the nearby Spišská Kapitula, inscribed in 1993, and it has served as a location for several films.
