Construction of Beijing Capital International Airport

2 March 1958

Beijing Capital International Airport is the main airport serving the Chinese capital, located northeast of the city center in Chaoyang and Shunyi districts. It opened in March 1958 with a single terminal, and for many years it was the main gateway for international travel to the People's Republic of China. The airport grew rapidly with the country's economic reforms, and a huge new Terminal 3, designed by Foster and Partners, opened in 2008 just before the Beijing Olympic Games. It was for years one of the busiest airports in the world, ranking second after Atlanta in passenger traffic before the pandemic. In 2019 the new Beijing Daxing International Airport opened south of the city to relieve its congestion.
