Construction of Anfield

1885

Anfield is a football stadium in Liverpool and the home of Liverpool Football Club. It was built in the mid-1880s on land owned by the brewer John Houlding and was first used by Everton, who played there until a dispute over rent led them to move to Goodison Park in 1892. Houlding then founded Liverpool Football Club to play at Anfield. The Kop, the large stand at one end named after a hill of the Boer War, became famous for its singing, including the anthem You'll Never Walk Alone. After the Hillsborough disaster of 1989 the ground became all-seater, and it has since been enlarged, with new stands opened in 2016 and 2024. Liverpool won many of its titles there.
