Construction of Rijksmuseum

1885

The Rijksmuseum is the national museum of the Netherlands, located in Amsterdam on the Museumplein. The collection began in The Hague in 1800 and moved to Amsterdam a few years later, and the present building, designed by the architect Pierre Cuypers in a Gothic and Renaissance revival style, opened in 1885. The museum holds a vast collection of Dutch art and history, with masterpieces of the Golden Age such as Rembrandt's The Night Watch and works by Vermeer and Frans Hals. A major renovation lasted about ten years and ended in 2013, when the museum reopened with restored halls and a new entrance. It attracts millions of visitors a year and is among the most visited museums in Europe.
