Charlie Hebdo shooting

7 January 2015

Two brothers, Said and Cherif Kouachi, armed with assault rifles, forced their way into the Paris offices of the satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo and killed twelve people, among them the editor Stephane Charbonnier and several well-known cartoonists. The magazine had published cartoons of the prophet Muhammad that offended many Muslims, and the attackers said they were acting for al-Qaeda in Yemen. Two days later, a gunman linked to them killed four people at a kosher supermarket in Paris. Seventeen people died in the attacks in total. Millions marched in France in solidarity under the slogan Je suis Charlie, and the events prompted debate over free speech and security.
