Boston Marathon bombings

15 April 2013

The Boston Marathon bombings were a terrorist attack at the finish line of the Boston Marathon, when two homemade pressure cooker bombs exploded within seconds of each other among the spectators. Three people were killed and several hundred were injured, many of them losing limbs. The FBI identified the suspects, the brothers Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, who killed a police officer at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and fought a gun battle in Watertown, where Tamerlan died. After a manhunt in which much of the Boston area was locked down, Dzhokhar was found hiding in a boat. He was convicted in 2015 and sentenced to death. The attack was followed by an outpouring of support for the city.
