Discovery of Kepler-62 f

May 2013

Kepler-62 f is an exoplanet orbiting Kepler-62, a star somewhat smaller and cooler than the Sun in the constellation Lyra, roughly 1,200 light-years away. It was discovered by NASA's Kepler space telescope using the transit method, as one of five planets in the system. Kepler-62 f is a super-Earth, with a radius about one and a half times that of Earth, and it orbits at the outer edge of the star's habitable zone, in a period of about 267 days. Its true mass and composition are not known, but models suggest that it could be rocky or covered in ocean. Along with its neighbour Kepler-62 e, it was among the first small planets found in a habitable zone.
