Rudolf Christoph Eucken was born on 5 January 1846 in Aurich. A German philosopher, Eucken taught at the universities of Basel and Jena. He developed a philosophy of life, often called activism, which held that spiritual life is the central reality and that human beings find meaning by striving for independence from the natural world. His books include The Meaning and Value of Life and The Life of the Spirit, and he was widely read in his time and influential on religious thought. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1908 for his earnest search for truth. His philosophy is now rarely read.
