First Anglo-Sikh War

from 11 December 1845 to 9 March 1846

The First Anglo-Sikh War was fought between the Sikh Empire of Punjab and the British East India Company. After the death of Maharaja Ranjit Singh in 1839, the kingdom was weakened by court intrigues and by the power of its army, the Khalsa, and in December 1845 the Sikh troops crossed the Sutlej river into British territory. The Company's army won hard battles at Mudki, Ferozeshah, Aliwal and Sobraon. In the Treaty of Lahore the Sikhs gave up territory, paid an indemnity and accepted a British resident at the court of the child Maharaja Duleep Singh. Kashmir was sold to Gulab Singh of Jammu. The Sikh state was finally annexed after the Second Anglo-Sikh War.
