Katsushika Hokusai was born on 31 October 1760 in Honjo. A Japanese artist of the Edo period, Hokusai worked in the ukiyo-e style of woodblock prints and painting. He is best known for the series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, which includes The Great Wave off Kanagawa, one of the most famous images in the world. He also produced the Hokusai Manga, volumes of sketches of people, animals and everyday life, and illustrated books. He changed his name many times in his long career and kept working into old age, saying he hoped to improve with each year. His prints influenced European artists such as Monet, Van Gogh and Degas.
