Friedrich Schiller was born on 10 November 1759 in Marbach am Neckar. A German playwright, poet, philosopher and historian, Schiller made his name with the stormy drama The Robbers in 1781. He later produced the classical plays Don Carlos, the Wallenstein trilogy, Mary Stuart and William Tell, which dramatize the struggle for freedom against tyranny. He also wrote philosophical essays on beauty and aesthetic education. His close friendship and collaboration with Goethe in Weimar defined the era of German Classicism. His poem Ode to Joy was set to music by Beethoven in the finale of the Ninth Symphony. He suffered from poor health throughout his adult life and died at 45.
