Jacob Zuma was born on 12 April 1942 in Nkandla. A South African politician, Zuma served as president of the country from 2009 to 2018 and as leader of the African National Congress. A Zulu who had only a little formal education, he joined the ANC as a youth and was imprisoned on Robben Island, later working in exile in intelligence. His presidency was marked by accusations of corruption and the inquiry into state capture, in which business associates such as the Gupta family were alleged to have influenced government. He was forced to resign in 2018, and in 2021 was jailed for contempt of court after refusing to testify before the inquiry, which sparked severe unrest.
