Guillermo Lasso was born on 16 November 1955 in Guayaquil. An Ecuadorian banker and politician, Lasso became a prominent businessman as the head of Banco de Guayaquil and was minister of the economy briefly in 1999. He founded the conservative CREO movement and ran for president in 2013 and 2017 before winning the 2021 election against Andrés Arauz, taking office in May. His term saw a campaign of mass vaccination against Covid-19 and a rise in violent crime linked to drug trafficking. Facing an impeachment process in the National Assembly, in May 2023 he used a constitutional mechanism, called muerte cruzada, to dissolve the assembly and call early elections, in which he did not run.
