Emily Dickinson was born on 10 December 1830 in Amherst. An American poet, Dickinson lived a mostly secluded life in her family home in Amherst, Massachusetts, where she wrote nearly eighteen hundred poems. Only a handful were published in her lifetime, and these were edited to conform to conventions. After her death her sister discovered the manuscripts, and later editions restored her unconventional punctuation, dashes and slant rhymes. Her short, compressed poems on death, nature, faith and the mind, such as Because I could not stop for Death, are now seen as among the most original in American literature.
