The music of the Brazilian national anthem was composed by Francisco Manuel da Silva in the period after Emperor Pedro I abdicated, and the tune was played in public ceremonies for decades. After the proclamation of the republic in 1889 it was retained as the national anthem. Lyrics by Joaquim Osorio Duque-Estrada were chosen in 1909 and made official by decree in 1922, at the time of the centenary of independence. The words praise the beauty and greatness of the country and recall the cry of independence at the Ipiranga stream in 1822. The anthem is among the best known national anthems in South America.
