November Uprising

from 29 November 1830 to 21 October 1831

The November Uprising was a Polish rebellion against Russian rule in Congress Poland, the state set up by the Congress of Vienna in union with the Russian crown. It began when young army cadets in Warsaw attacked the residence of the Grand Duke Constantine, the Russian viceroy, and the rebellion soon spread, with Poland declaring the Romanov dynasty deposed. The Polish army fought several battles against the larger Russian forces, including at Grochow and Ostroleka, but it was eventually defeated, and Warsaw fell in the autumn of 1831. The Russian authorities abolished Poland's constitution and army, and thousands of Poles, including leading figures such as Chopin, went into exile in the Great Emigration.
