The People's Republic of Bulgaria was the communist state that replaced the Bulgarian monarchy after a referendum in 1946 abolished it, and it was proclaimed under the Communist leader Georgi Dimitrov. It nationalised industry and collectivised farming, and became one of the Soviet Union's most loyal allies in the Eastern Bloc. Todor Zhivkov led the country from 1954 until 1989, when he was removed amid the wider fall of communist regimes in Europe. Bulgaria industrialised and urbanised in these decades, but political opposition was suppressed. In 1990 the country dropped the communist name and became the Republic of Bulgaria, with free elections held that year.
