Diana, Princess of Wales was born on 1 July 1961 in Park House. A member of the British royal family, Diana was born Lady Diana Spencer, and married Prince Charles in 1981 in a ceremony watched by hundreds of millions of people. She was the mother of Princes William and Harry. Beyond her royal duties she became known for humanitarian work, including visits to AIDS patients, which helped to reduce stigma, and campaigning against landmines. Her marriage broke down publicly, and the couple separated in 1992 and divorced in 1996. In August 1997 she died in a car crash in a Paris tunnel while being pursued by photographers, an event that caused an extraordinary outpouring of public grief in Britain and around the world.
