Haymarket affair

4 May 1886

The Haymarket affair began as a rally in Haymarket Square in Chicago, held in support of workers striking for the eight-hour day and in protest at the police killing of strikers the previous day. As police moved to disperse the crowd, someone threw a bomb that killed a police officer, and the police opened fire, killing several people and wounding many more. Eight anarchists were tried, and although there was no evidence that they had thrown the bomb, seven were sentenced to death and one to prison. Four were hanged. The trial is widely seen as a miscarriage of justice, and the affair is the origin of International Workers' Day on May Day.
