Benjamin Disraeli was born on 21 December 1804 in London. A British Conservative statesman and novelist, Disraeli twice served as Prime Minister, in 1868 and from 1874 to 1880. Born into a Jewish family, but baptized as a child into the Church of England, he began as a writer, with novels such as Sybil and Coningsby, before entering Parliament. He led the Conservatives for decades in opposition to William Gladstone, and passed the Second Reform Act in 1867, which extended the vote to many working men. His government bought a controlling share in the Suez Canal, and made Queen Victoria Empress of India. He was a favorite of the queen, who made him Earl of Beaconsfield.
