Fatima was born on 27 July 604 CE in Mecca. The daughter of the Prophet Muhammad and his first wife, Khadija, Fatima is a revered figure in Islam, and especially in Shia tradition. She married Ali ibn Abi Talib, who later became the fourth caliph, and was the mother of Hasan and Husayn, whose descendants are known as sayyids or sharifs. Traditions describe her as devout, modest and close to her father, and she is known by titles such as al-Zahra, the radiant. She died within months of her father, and accounts differ on the circumstances of her death. Shia Muslims regard her as a model of piety.
