The War of the Second Coalition was a conflict between Revolutionary France and a coalition that included Britain, Austria, Russia, Naples and the Ottoman Empire. It was formed after the French expedition to Egypt, and the allies won early successes in Italy under the Russian general Suvorov. Russia withdrew after quarrels with its allies and the failure of an Anglo-Russian invasion of Holland. Napoleon Bonaparte returned from Egypt and took power as First Consul in the coup of 18 Brumaire, and he defeated the Austrians at Marengo in 1800 while Moreau won at Hohenlinden. Austria made peace at Lunéville in 1801, and Britain, left alone, signed the Peace of Amiens in 1802.
