Abdel Fattah el-Sisi was born on 19 November 1954 in Cairo. An Egyptian military officer and politician, el-Sisi has been President of Egypt since 2014. As defense minister and head of the army he led the removal of President Mohamed Morsi in July 2013 after mass protests against him, and was elected president the following year with a large majority. His rule has been marked by a harsh crackdown on the Muslim Brotherhood and other opponents, which has drawn criticism from human rights organizations. He has launched large infrastructure projects, including the new Suez Canal channel and a new administrative capital east of Cairo. A constitutional amendment in 2019 allowed him to remain in office until 2030.
