2025 conclave

May 2025

The 2025 papal conclave was the assembly of cardinals in the Sistine Chapel that elected a successor to Pope Francis, who died on Easter Monday after a period of illness. A large number of cardinal electors, from dozens of countries, took part, many appointed by Francis himself, which made it the most geographically diverse conclave in history. After a short period of voting, white smoke rose from the chimney, and the cardinals chose Robert Francis Prevost, an American-born Augustinian who had worked as a missionary in Peru. He took the name Leo XIV and became the first pope from the United States.
