2021 European floods

2021

The 2021 European floods were a series of severe floods in July in Western Europe, caused by days of intense rainfall that fell on already saturated ground. The worst-affected areas were in Germany, particularly the Ahr valley in Rhineland-Palatinate and parts of North Rhine-Westphalia, and in Belgium, where the Vesdre river flooded Verviers and Liege, and the floods also hit Luxembourg and the Netherlands. More than two hundred people died, and thousands of homes, roads, bridges and railways were destroyed or damaged. Studies later found that climate change had made such heavy rainfall more likely, and the response of the authorities, including the warning systems, was criticised.
