January 6 United States Capitol attack

6 January 2021

On 6 January 2021, while a joint session of the U.S. Congress met to count the electoral votes confirming Joe Biden's victory in the 2020 presidential election, a crowd of supporters of the outgoing president Donald Trump stormed the Capitol in Washington. Many had attended a rally near the White House where Trump repeated unsupported claims that the election had been stolen. Rioters overwhelmed police lines and entered the building, forcing lawmakers and Vice President Mike Pence to evacuate and delaying the count for several hours. Several people died during or soon after the events, and many police officers were injured. Congress resumed that night and certified the result, Trump was impeached a second time for incitement of insurrection but acquitted by the Senate, and well over a thousand participants were charged.
