War against the Islamic State

13 June 2014

The war against the Islamic State was a military campaign by a broad range of forces to defeat the militant group that had declared a caliphate across large parts of Iraq and Syria. The group's capture of Mosul and other cities prompted a US-led international coalition to begin air strikes in 2014. On the ground, the Iraqi army, Kurdish Peshmerga, Shia militias and Syrian Kurdish-led forces fought the group, with Syrian government forces, Russia and Iran also involved. The Islamic State lost Mosul in 2017 and its capital, Raqqa, later that year, and its last territory at Baghuz in 2019. Its leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi was killed in a US raid. The group has continued as an insurgent and terrorist network.
