Construction of Sheremetyevo International Airport

1961

Sheremetyevo is one of the main international airports serving Moscow, located northwest of the city center in the Khimki district. It started as an airfield in the 1950s and opened for civilian international flights around 1960, taking its name from the nearby Sheremetyev family estate. During the Soviet era it was the main gateway for international passenger flights to the capital and later it became the main hub of Aeroflot. After the end of the Soviet Union it was extensively modernized, with several new terminals built from the 2000s, including a separate terminal for domestic flights. It is among the busiest airports in Russia and Eastern Europe, although traffic has been affected by sanctions and airspace restrictions since 2022.
