Uyghur Khaganate

from 744 CE to 840 CE

The Uyghur Khaganate was a Turkic empire in Mongolia and Central Asia that followed the fall of the Second Turkic Khaganate. Its first ruler overthrew the Turks and established a capital at Ordu-Baliq, on the Orkhon River, a city with walls and markets that was unusual among nomadic empires. The Uyghurs allied with the Tang dynasty of China and helped it to suppress the An Lushan rebellion, in exchange for payments of silk and horses. In the 760s the khagan Bogu converted to Manichaeism, a faith brought by Sogdian merchants, which became the state religion. The khaganate collapsed when it was attacked by the Yenisei Kyrgyz, and many Uyghurs migrated to the oases of the Tarim Basin and Gansu.
