Stamford Bridge in Fulham, west London, opened as an athletics ground and was for years home to the London Athletic Club. In 1905 the businessman Gus Mears acquired it and, when other clubs showed no interest in renting it, founded Chelsea Football Club to play there. The ground hosted FA Cup finals in the early 1920s and drew very large crowds in the postwar years. It was rebuilt in stages from the 1970s and, after financial troubles, came under new ownership in 2003. Today it is an all-seater stadium that holds around forty thousand spectators.
