Second Sudanese Civil War

from 5 June 1983 to 9 January 2005

The Second Sudanese Civil War was fought between the Sudanese government in Khartoum and the Sudan People's Liberation Movement and Army in the south, led by John Garang. It resumed an earlier conflict after President Jaafar Nimeiry abolished southern autonomy and imposed Islamic law. The conflict was about power, resources such as oil, religion and identity, and fighting was joined by militias and tribal rivalries. It caused widespread famine and displacement, and an estimated two million people died, mostly civilians, which made it one of the deadliest wars since the Second World War. The Comprehensive Peace Agreement of 2005 ended it, and in 2011 the south voted to become the independent state of South Sudan.
