Founding of Disney Channel

18 April 1983

Disney Channel is an American television channel aimed at children and teenagers, owned by the Walt Disney Company. It began as a premium cable subscription service in the United States, showing classic Disney films, shorts and family programs. It moved to basic cable in the late 1990s, and under executives such as Anne Sweeney it developed original series and made-for-television movies, among them High School Musical. The channel launched the careers of performers including Hilary Duff, Miley Cyrus, Selena Gomez and Demi Lovato. Disney also created versions of the channel for many other countries, and it later spun off related channels such as Disney Junior.
