The Second Schleswig War was fought between Denmark and the German powers Prussia and Austria over the duchies of Schleswig and Holstein, whose status had been a source of conflict for years. It began after Denmark approved a constitution that tied Schleswig closely to the Danish kingdom, which Germans saw as a breach of earlier agreements. Prussian and Austrian troops advanced quickly, and the Prussians took the fortified Danish positions at Dybbol. Denmark lost the duchies and about a third of its territory. The war was the first of three that Bismarck used to unify Germany, followed by the war with Austria and the Franco-Prussian War.
