Max Weber was born on 21 April 1864 in Erfurt. A German sociologist, economist and political thinker, Weber was a founder of modern sociology. His book The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism argued that certain Protestant values helped shape the attitudes of modern capitalism. He studied bureaucracy and distinguished three types of legitimate authority: traditional, charismatic and legal-rational. In his lecture Politics as a Vocation he defined the state as claiming a monopoly on legitimate force. His methods, which stressed understanding the meaning that individuals attach to their actions, shaped the social sciences. His major synthesis, Economy and Society, was published after his death from pneumonia.
