Edvard Munch was born on 12 December 1863 in Ådalsbruk. A Norwegian painter and printmaker, Munch is best known for The Scream, a haunting image of anxiety that became one of the most recognizable works in Western art. His paintings explored love, illness, jealousy and death, themes shaped by the early loss of his mother and sister and by his own fragile mental health. A major figure in Symbolism and a forerunner of Expressionism, he worked in Berlin, Paris and Norway and produced a series known as the Frieze of Life. He bequeathed his remaining works to the city of Oslo, which established the Munch Museum.
