Rise of Neoplatonism

245 CE

Neoplatonism was a school of philosophy that developed from the thought of Plato, and its founder is generally considered to be Plotinus, who settled in Rome in the middle of the third century CE and taught there. His disciple Porphyry edited his writings as the Enneads. Plotinus described reality as an emanation from a single ultimate principle, the One, through Intellect and Soul to the material world, and held that the soul could return to the One through contemplation. Later thinkers such as Iamblichus and Proclus developed it further. Neoplatonism influenced Christian thinkers such as Augustine, Islamic and Jewish philosophy, and Renaissance humanists.
