Origins of Gundeshapur

271 CE

Gundeshapur was a city of the Sasanian Empire, in southwestern Iran, in the province of Khuzestan. It was founded by Shapur I, reportedly settled with Roman prisoners captured after his victory over the emperor Valerian. Later it became a centre of learning, with a famous hospital and medical school, where Greek, Indian and Persian scholars, many of them Christians of the Syriac tradition, translated and taught medical and philosophical texts. After the Islamic conquest, the city kept its importance, and its physicians were influential at the Abbasid court. Historians debate how far it was an academy in the strict sense, but its role in transmitting medical knowledge to the Islamic world is generally accepted.
