Christianity becomes the state religion of Rome

27 February 380 CE

On 27 February 380 the emperors Theodosius I, Gratian and Valentinian II issued the edict 'Cunctos populos' at Thessalonica, ordering all subjects to follow the faith of the Bishop of Rome and the Bishop of Alexandria, that is Nicene Christianity. Heretical groups were condemned. In 391 and 392 further laws banned pagan sacrifices and closed the temples, and the Olympic Games ended soon after. This turned the religion of a persecuted minority a century earlier into the official religion of the Roman state and shaped the history of Europe.
