Construction of Roman amphitheatre of El Jem

238 CE

The Roman amphitheatre of El Jem, in central Tunisia, was built in the ancient city of Thysdrus, a prosperous center of olive oil production, and is one of the best-preserved Roman amphitheatres in the world. According to tradition, it was started by the local governor Gordian, who was proclaimed emperor there in a revolt against Maximinus Thrax, though it may never have been fully completed. It could hold tens of thousands of spectators, making it one of the largest in the Roman world after the Colosseum. The building has an elliptical shape and three tiers of arches. In later centuries it was used as a fortress, and during Berber resistance to the Arab conquest, and it is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
