Rise of Assemblies of God

1914

The Assemblies of God is a Pentecostal Christian denomination, formed in Hot Springs, Arkansas, when several hundred ministers and laypeople who had been part of the Pentecostal revival came together to organise as a fellowship. The Pentecostal movement, which emphasises the baptism of the Holy Spirit, speaking in tongues and healing, had spread rapidly after the Azusa Street revival in Los Angeles in 1906. The Assemblies of God settled its headquarters in Springfield, Missouri, and became active in missionary work around the world. It has grown into one of the largest Pentecostal groups, with tens of millions of adherents worldwide, particularly in Latin America, Africa and Asia.
