Willy Brandt was born on 18 December 1913 in Meierstraße. A German Social Democrat, Brandt was mayor of West Berlin during the building of the Berlin Wall and then chancellor of West Germany from 1969 to 1974. He was born Herbert Frahm and fled to Norway under the Nazis, taking his new name in exile. As chancellor he pursued Ostpolitik, a policy of reconciliation with Eastern Europe, signing treaties with the Soviet Union and Poland and recognizing East Germany in practice, and he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1971. His kneeling at the Warsaw Ghetto memorial became a famous gesture. He resigned after one of his aides was exposed as an East German spy.
