Release of The Fox and the Hound

10 July 1981

The Fox and the Hound is a Disney animated film based on the 1967 novel by Daniel P. Mannix. It tells the story of a young red fox, Tod, and a hunting-dog puppy, Copper, who become friends but are pulled apart when Copper is trained to hunt and Tod becomes his quarry. Directed by Art Stevens, Ted Berman and Richard Rich, it featured the voices of Mickey Rooney and Kurt Russell as the adult characters. It was one of the last films made with the involvement of Disney's veteran animators and also helped train a new generation of artists, among them Tim Burton and Brad Bird. It is remembered for its emotional treatment of friendship and prejudice.
