Release of Litecoin

7 October 2011

Litecoin is a cryptocurrency created by Charlie Lee, a former Google engineer, who described it as silver to Bitcoin's gold. It was released as open-source software, based on the Bitcoin code but with a faster block time of two and a half minutes, a different hashing algorithm called Scrypt that was meant to make mining with specialized hardware harder, and a larger total supply of 84 million coins. Specialized mining hardware for Scrypt did appear later. Litecoin was among the first altcoins to gain wide use, and it adopted technologies such as Segregated Witness and the Lightning Network early. Lee sold his holdings in 2017 to avoid a conflict of interest.
