Creation of Dart

10 October 2011

Dart is a programming language created at Google and unveiled at a conference in Aarhus, Denmark. It was designed by Lars Bak and Kasper Lund, who had earlier worked on the V8 JavaScript engine, as a modern alternative to JavaScript for building web applications. It has a clear syntax similar to Java and C, optional typing, and can be compiled to JavaScript or native code. Dart did not replace JavaScript in browsers, but it found a new life when Google chose it for Flutter, a toolkit for building mobile, web and desktop applications from a single code base. The language has since gained features such as sound null safety and pattern matching.
