Creation of Android

23 September 2008

Android is an operating system for mobile devices based on the Linux kernel. It was originally developed by a startup, Android Inc., founded in 2003 by Andy Rubin and others, which Google bought in 2005. The first commercial phone running Android, the HTC Dream, known in the US as the T-Mobile G1, went on sale after the public release in 2008. Google made Android available as open-source software, and many manufacturers adopted it free of charge, which led to rapid growth in the smartphone market. It became the world's most widely used mobile operating system, competing mainly with Apple's iOS, and it also powers tablets, televisions and wearable devices.
