Der er et yndigt land, meaning There is a lovely land, is one of the two national anthems of Denmark, the other being the royal anthem Kong Christian stod ved hojen mast. The words were written by the poet Adam Oehlenschlager, who is celebrated as a leading figure of Danish Romanticism, and the melody was composed by Hans Ernst Kroyer. The song celebrates the Danish landscape, with its beech forests, sandy shores and green islands, and recalls the country's medieval past. It became popular in the nineteenth century, a time of rising national feeling, and was formally adopted as the national anthem in the twentieth century. It is sung at national occasions and sporting events.
